Wife of the Prophet

Wife of the Prophet
Sayyidah Ruqoyah ibn Muhammad

There is no month to be missed other than Ramadan. Ramadan is a month full of glory. But in the month of Ramadan there are also many important events in the history of Islam. One of them is the death of Ruqayyah bint Muhammad. Here is the story of the death of Sayyidah Ruqayyah in the month of Ramadan which is interesting to listen to.

Ruqayyah was the second daughter of the Prophet with Khadijah. Ruqayyah was born in the year 20 before Hijri and 7 years before the Apostle got his prophethood. When Ruqayyah was born, the Apostle was 33 years old.

The Ruqayyah Love Story

Ruqayyah was first married to her cousin Utbah bin Abu Lahab. Although Khadijah, the mother did not like this marriage very much, but she only hoped that her daughter would not be affected by the bad behavior of her father-in-law, Umm Jamil bint Harb. When the Prophet received his prophethood, Ruqayyah embraced Islam. But unfortunately, the husband, Utbah did not embrace Islam.

Both of his parents-in-law slandered and harmed the Prophet. Surah Al Lahab to Abu Lahab.

“Then Abu Lahab's two hands and he shall perish. Beneficial not to him his property and what he has worked for, he will enter into a turbulent fire. And (so too) his wife, the firewood-carrier. The one around his neck is a rope from coir.” (QS Al-Lahab: 1-5)

After the descent of this Surah, Abu Lahab was increasingly angry at the Prophet. He then ordered his son to divorce Ruqayyah. Ruqayyah who had never been touched by Utbah finally separated.

It turned out that after escaping from Utbah, God had chosen a soul mate that was so noble for Ruqayyah. It was Usman bin Affan. The Quraysh youth were so dignified and came from a respectable family. Usman ibn Affan also turned out to have put his heart on Ruqayyah for a long time, only to be hampered due to Ruqayyah's marriage with Utbah. Therefore, as soon as the news of Ruqayyah's divorce was heard, he immediately came to the Prophet to ask Ruqayyah.

Both are married. But since that day, the torture of Muslims has only gotten worse. The Prophet asked Ruqayyah and Usman ibn Affan to emigrate to Habashah, which was led by a wise king. Together with other muhajirin, Usman and Ruqayyah also migrated to Habashah. Both of them lived in peace.

Anas bin Malik narrated, Uthman bin Affan came out with his wife, Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad SAW to Habashah. For a long time, the Prophet had never heard from his son-in-law. Then came a woman of Quraysh saying,

“Wahai Muhammad, I've seen your son-in-law with his wife.”

The woman replied, “He has brought his wife on a slow walking donkey, while he holds her control.”

So the Prophet said, “Allah accompanies both. Indeed Uthman was the first man to emigrate to take his wife after Luth AS.”

Soon, the glad news arrived that Makkah was safe. Ruqayyah and Usman soon returned to Mecca, but it turned out that the conditions seen were not as what was heard. The slaughter of the Muslims only got worse so they did not dare to enter Mecca during the day. As a result, they wait until night then enter their homes.

Ruqayyah also let go of longing with her family. Unfortunately, his return was not welcomed by his mother because he had died. Ruqayyah was crying. But the Prophet calmed Ruqayyah down again.

Seeing so cruel the attack on the Muslims, the Apostle again ordered to migrate to Medina. So Ruqayyah became a woman who did hijrah twice. Ruqayyah and Usman also brought their son, Abdullah bin Usman.

Ruqayyah's Death

They arrived safely in Medina. A safe and peaceful life is felt again. But unfortunately the peaceful life was not long felt by Ruqayyah. He lost his favorite son, Abdullah, to a high fever. Ruqayyah who has just grieved the loss of her mother must return to feel the loss of her son.

This time, the grief was increasingly depleting Ruqayyah's body. He also became ill and had a high fever. When he fell ill, the Apostle gave orders to wage the battle of Badr. Usman immediately prepared himself for battle, but he was ordered by the Apostle to accompany his ailing wife.

But it turned out to be Ruqayyah's last day. She breathed her last breath right next to her husband in the month of Ramadan in the year 2 Hijri. Usman could only cry behind the curtain of his tears. Ruqayyah was buried in the absence of her father, Prophet Aaw. Upon his return from the battle of Badr, the Apostle and Fatimah wept beside the tomb of Ruqayyah.

Thus the story of the death of Sayyidah Ruqayyah in the month of Ramadan without the presence of the Prophet led to his departure.
