The figure smiled at me and that smile was exactly the same as Reinner when he smiled. “That's right, my face is indeed similar to the face of Reinner-your son, Sarayu. The reason is easy, because Reinner is none other than my reincarnation.”
The black stone that had been around my neck for ten years then moved towards the figure with Reinner's face along with the golden brown stick that I had been with all this time keep the.
“So you. .”
The figure nodded its head. “The reason I chose you is because in the future I will be born from your womb and be your son, Sarayu. Therefore, you are called the keeper.”
I did not believe the words of that figure and still could not digest the meaning of his words to me. All this time.. . I always wondered what made me special until the stone chose me after returning intact? Just because I always go back on my path and have a stand, doesn't mean that stone will choose me. In this world there are still many people who are able and much better to keep the stone.
The question had been coming to my mind for ten years and I could never find the answer. And now the owner of the stone showed me his face and made me see what my son Reinner would look like when he grew up.
“Now explain to me, why did that stone choose me for these ten years??”
“Because I chose you to be my mother.” The figure answered my question in a light tone as if what I had been asking for these ten years was a light question.
“Kukira. . so far the offspring is always passed on by the father to his son. Why did you choose the woman in your lineage to bring you born into this world??” I'm still not understanding. In this life, I learned that a father would choose his son to carry on his surname. But as for this figure of the man before me, he had instead chosen a woman from his descendants to bring him to this world.
“Have you heard that a good mother will produce a good son, Sarayu?”
I tilted my head still not understanding. “Is there such a greeting??”
The figure nodded its head. “I believe that, Sarayu. A good mother will raise her child well too. A child will be in the womb of his mother for less than nine months and during those nine months, the prospective child will read and learn what his mother thinks and feels,. The bond for nine months is a special bond because the basics of the nature of the child will come from there.”
“So you think. . . I'll be a good mom, so?”
The figure nodded its head again this time with a sweet smile on its lips that made me see my Reinner-son. “Yes, you've really been a good mother to Reinner. Despite carrying the stone around your neck and having earned the nickname the hero of the third world war, you choose to hide yourself in the mountains and start your life peacefully with your little family while keeping the stone until its owner arrives. You must not have thought that the owner of the stone would be born into this world as your son, did you not, Sarayu?”
I nodded my head. “Y-yes. I really didn't expect it.”
“In the past. . . The same is always the case, Sarayu. I always choose the woman in my lineage for where I incarnate. Every single female descendant I choose, she will face a fairly strenuous and heavier test of life than most of my other descendants. The test of life will shape their character and their way of thinking. Slowly. . I lead them not to have greed in their hearts and to live with wisdom along the way.”
“What does it always work for?” manya curious.
“Not always. The few descendants I chose, failed their test and made some of my descendants walk out of the right way. When that happened, I saw that those I chose were far from being able to become my guard and raise me later.”
“I guess what you mean is my grandmother,” reply me with a bitter smile. I remember how my grandmother lived. She is the only daughter in her family and gets a lot of affection because of her beauty. But the affection he received in excess it makes him unable to behave wisely in the course of his life.
When my mother was born and brought the same luck and even greater than her, my grandmother secretly harbored envy in her own daughter and then chose not to love my mother because she felt she loved her so much. Unfortunately. . .my grandmother who has always been loved by everyone forgets the fact that the affection of parents and the affection of others will remain different. No matter how unfortunately others are to us, that affection will not be able to defeat the affection of parents.
“You realize it, Sarayu??”
I nodded my head. “Of course, I'm aware. From my mother, I learned a lot.”
The figure smiled at me again. “This is what makes me like you, Sarayu. You choose to be a good observer of every life story you encounter in your life. The shortcomings you receive in your life, you think of as the way God loves you and not the way you humble yourself. Even though you feel hopeless a few times, you can always get back excited. Not once in your life have you thought about killing yourself because you always believed God always had a way for every hardship you went through.”
I smiled bitterly at the compliment. “I think you rate me too high, my ancestor. Can I ask??”
“What do you want to ask?”
“Since you asked in your heart. I clearly remember you asking this in your heart. ‘What do they see of this luxury? What makes them so crazy about this and that?’ that day, I finally discovered that you felt a void when you were in the sparkle of the world. Since then. . . I've been watching you and hearing the questions you always ask. ‘What do they see from this world? Why do they hurt each other just because of the small amount of money? Why do they hunt for a lot of wealth if in the end that wealth will make them miserable?’ and there are still many other questions that I think the number is not hundreds and maybe tens of thousands.”
I gawked at the figure's explanation because he knew the questions I had been asking in my heart and had never told me in my entire life.
“You really paid attention to me until the questions I asked in my heart all this time, you know.”
“Hahahaha.” The figure laughed at my question. “Don't I tell you if I could carelessly choose the mother where I would be born into the world? I must carefully make a choice because the stone will harm if it is in the wrong hands.”
Finally after ten years. . . I found the answer to my question. The reason the stone draped itself around my neck and chose me was that the owner would be born from my womb. The stone was by my side because the owner was also by my side.
“Because I have found the answer to my question for ten years now, after this. . . am I going to die?” ask me with a bitter tone.
“Ya. . As you see in your future using this stone, you will indeed die, Sarayu. Your duty as a guard is also over. You've been the best guard I've ever met in the many life cycles I've been through.”
“Then. . How about Reinner in the future?”
“He will be a savior in the future. The task he carries is heavier than yours but. . . I promise you one thing, Reinner will be able to get through it, Sarayu. You don't have to worry about it.”
I smiled at the small promise from my ancestors. Like many of the heroic stories I've read, I know that this time. . I'm not a hero and not the main character in the story. “Thank you for making that promise. Although I can't see him growing up, I'm glad to hear that Reinner will be able to grow up well later.”
“Nah. . . Now it's time for you to go, Sarayu. Thank you for all your efforts as a Guardian. Rest in peace, The Best Keeper.”
Up ahead. . . the afterlife awaits me. I don't know if I'm going to heaven or go to hell because of the blood on my hands. But. .one thing I know, this death, this life and what I went through to this day, I never regret it. After struggling with all my might, after trying so hard to save the people I love, this death is not sad for me. I died for the people I love and am proud of. This death is far better than any death I could have ever imagined where I died alone without anyone who might remember me.
This is the death I wanted, the death I expected and the best death I could have.

Reinner closed the notebook he had been working on for half a year. After ten years of his mother's death, Reinner only heard the story of his mother's journey from the mouth of Uncle Ethan who was getting old and began to fall ill. During this half year, Reinner accidentally asks Uncle Ethan who raised him to tell the story of his mother and the tragic death he faced.
“I never thought if in the past, Mom is a war hero.” Reinner looked at the note by holding a black stone around his neck.
Reinner then opened the last page of his note and wrote down the closing sentence in his note that he would leave as historical evidence before he left to face the coming great calamity.
If you had known about the story of the famous hero who saved the world, you would not have known that the mother of the hero turned out to have many tests in her life. The mother of the hero is often forgotten or not even told because the story is not as beautiful as the hero story itself.
My mother is the same.
In order to bring me into this world, she lived a life full of struggles and for my birth in a peaceful world, she had to go to war. The struggle is so great but the story is never recorded anywhere.
Whoever read this story, thank you.
Thank you for reading this story of the Guard. Thank you for hearing the long story of the Guard that was forgotten because it was covered by my story.
I hope that after reading this story, you will also feel what I feel and remember this story in your heart.
