Accompany Me to Die

Accompany Me to Die
Sukir Kendhat

Dew is still reluctant to leave the foliage, the sun begins to peek behind the gray clouds. A wet morning because it rained again last night fell on the village. Villagers wriggled again, stretched their muscles by gardening.A few went to town selling garden produce.

A faint puff of smoke from a cup of black coffee tempts Nayla to wake up from her sleep. He glanced at the wall clock, let out a long sigh and forced himself to open his eyes.

"Six o'clock, very tight. Feelings of just sleeping." Nayla sat on the bed, folded up the blanket and tidied up the pillow.

"Nay, I woke up in the afternoon! We'll be late!" his father's voice sounded from behind the door.

"Yes, it's awake."

Nayla answered while opening the door. His father was standing at the door with a cup of coffee.

"Mbok Dar makes breakfast?"

"Fried rice, shower keep us breakfast together."

Nayla walked dragging her feet lazily towards the bathroom. The first morning in a new place, cold and humid weather makes Nayla have to re-adapt. It was very different from the situation in his old home. There every morning Nayla is disturbed by the noise of vehicles but here Nayla only hears the sound of crickets and birds chirping or the sound of animals living at night. So calm and peaceful.

Nayla flushes her body with warm water, but Dar accidentally prepares warm water in a separate bucket for Nayla. The young doctor was grateful to have an understanding domestic assistant. Mbok seemed to understand if Nayla was not used to the cold air.

"Mbak Nay, want tea, what milk is coffee? Just choose!" Mbok Dar offers three glasses of warm drinks, tea, coffee and milk.

Nayla who was drying her hair chuckled, "Mbok, kayak want to love aja pake macem-macem make it. I'm if morning enough coffee aja mbok, want black and white it's ok." Nayla said as she grabbed a glass of black coffee.

"Oh that, mbok don't know what Nay's favorite? Yes, this is milk to make it hard is okay, mbak?"

Nayla nodded and pulled the chair at the dining table for him. "Dad, let's have breakfast!" Nayla called her father, and he took two rice cobs, a plop and crackers for her.

Nayla placed the plate right in front of the Son who had just sat down. I forgot to pour a glass of water for my father.

"You help me out today at the clinic, and the day can start traveling to the people's house."

"Okay," replied Nayla putting a mouthful of rice in her mouth

"Let's hold the rigor of Nayla's anther around the doctor." Mbok Dar interrupted while washing dishes.

"Ohya mbok, where is it hard not to have breakfast all the time?"

"Fresh not awake, ma'am. Last night he joined the same patrol residents." mbok Dar explained, he then prepared a plate of fried rice complete with eggs for Tegar.

"Ronda? Hhm, semalem serem also yes mbok, I heard the sound of birds of Kedasih outside Tegar said it was a bad sign."

Mbok Dar approached the dining table, he sighed heavily, "Yes mbak omen of death, it has been a long time we are here not horrified birds Kedasih gig since …,"

Mbok Dar paused his intention to speak, his face was gloomy and his eyes began to glaze over.

"What's mbok been doing?"

"Since .. um," mbok Dar hesitated, his lips twisted.

"Kulonowoon! Doctor sir .. assalamualaikum! Doctor sir!" a man's voice sounded from the porch of the house.

The Putra doctor followed Nayla and mbok Dar immediately came out to see who gave his morning greetings in a panicked tone.

"Sir doctor!" the face of the man in his forties looked deathly pale.

(Lho, what's up Jo? I'm calling the doctor like a demon just chased!)

Excited mbok Dar when he found out who called was Paijo, one of the village hansip.

"Anu mbok, doctor sir," his sentence was interrupted for a moment, he took a breath filling his lungs before returning to talk.

"That's doctor sir, there's a .. corpse!"

Nayla and her father looked at each other as Dar approached Paijo and patted her shoulder hard.

"Your lambemu iki! Piye's body, sing obviously le by the way!" (Your mouth is set! What a corpse, which obviously said!)

"Piye to mbok? Wong I'm tenanan, ora mbok!" (Where to mbok? That's right, don't lie!) Paijo protested against Dar's actions while holding his shoulder which was hot due to Dar's hard blow.

"Well, seriously Jo? Sopo sing dead?" (Who died?)

"Culve, mbok! Sukir!" (Cut, mbok! Sukir hanged himself!)

"Astaghfiullah! Sukir?!"

"Sir doctor, come with me. Mr. Kades is there too." Paijo asked Putra's doctor to come with him immediately to the scene.

The son doctor rushed inside to pick up the equipment, as did Nayla. While mbok Dar immediately woke Tegar who was still sound asleep.

Crowds began to fill the courtyard of an abandoned house in the middle of the village. The house is still quite good, weeds grow to fill the front yard and also in some parts of the house. Thick dust covered almost the entire window glass as well as the remaining furniture.

The son's doctor and Nayla immediately went inside. Mr. Kades and the village device that was there stared in disbelief at the stiff body of Sukir who was still hanging. Nayla was horrified to see it, her tongue sticking out with her eyes slightly open.

"Police are on their way," Mr. Kades spoke immediately as the son's doctor prepared.

"When was found?" The doctor was doing his job while waiting for the police.

"This morning, Mr. Arif found Sukir accidentally. The cat came off and went into this house, unfortunately even found a corpse like this." Mr. Agus explained.

Nayla watched Sukir's corpse closely, she also observed around. "Purely suicide" he concluded.

Sukir's body was found near the kitchen, Nayla looked into the backyard which was also filled with weeds. Two towering mango trees covered some of the light to get inside. Some kitchen furniture looks still intact, dusty and hanging on the wall.

"It's a pity, but the house is still good. Why empty?" he went back to mumbling.

A mystical Eve greeted as Nayla stared at the mirror above the sink. The crusty, opaque mirror reflected another figure that was not Nayla's shadow. Nayla's heart immediately beat fast, her legs limp and her voice choked. Although vague but Nayla was sure it was not her.

The woman in yellow with a red cloth wrapped around her neck, she stood right where she stood. Her face was not obvious, but it felt so scary to Nayla. He turned for a moment to the son doctor who is now examining the rigid body of Sukir on the floor.

Nayla was about to call her father but then she abandoned her intentions. He did not want other people to panic if he knew what he was seeing. Nayla looked back at the mirror but the woman in yellow disappeared. Nayla now sees herself in the mirror.

"Ilusi, this is just a trick of the eye." suggest himself.

But just as he turned around about to help his father, a voice greeted him gently. So smooth that it made all the feathers on his body stand up, only Nayla heard it. The same Javanese hum as he listened to yesterday afternoon when the rain was falling. Nayla trembled then turned to face behind, her eyes wide open. The figure appeared before him, combing his hair while humming.

Nayla could no longer scream. His eyes were fixed and could not turn away from the figure of the yellow woman. Nayla kept staring until the song was finished. The woman's hand stopped combing and looked at Nayla. The eyeball blackened with blood flowing from both eyes. Facial skin peeling and gaping wounds clearly visible on his neck. The wound was filled with maggots and gave off a foul smell that plagued his nose.

"Guide me here!"
